On the golf course, it was a rough day for former MLB All-Star CC Sabathia and Bachelor alum Matt James, but it was even worse for a couple of onlookers who bore the brunt of the celebrities’ athletic mistakes.
During the Pro-Am tournament section of this week’s Phoenix Open, both celebs fired horrifying tee shots into the crowd. First up, Bachelor star Matt James, who stood barefoot on the 16th hole tee box and shanked his shot straight into the leg of a nearby photographer, only inches from from causing major injury to the man’s groin area.
We’re not clear why James was golfing barefoot, but as John Daly previously demonstrated, playing without shoes isn’t always a disadvantage.
Will you accept this shank?

A breakdown from @MattJames919 and a follow-up with the victim. 😅 pic.twitter.com/1f5gpOZZYu“I just really want to apologize again for [hitting you],” the James said in a video message to the photographer after the incident. “I was not aiming for you, I don’t think frankly I was aiming for anything and that’s the problem. I probably should have never stepped out here.”
After surviving James’ golf course hazard, another spectator was put in jeopardy when an ex-New York Yankees ace stepped into the tee box.
According to TMZ Sports, the horrific drive from Sabathia occurred on the 18th hole of the Pro-Am tournament.
Sabathia, unlike James, who prepared for the competition at Topgolf, is known for his ability on the links. However, his par-4 18th hole drive was a disaster, shanking to the far right and injuring a spectator. Sabathia was gracious enough to sign a souvenir golf ball for the individual, who turned out to be a Yankees fan.
The celebrities appeared to be very sorry for their errant driving, and the people who were injured in both events were fine.
